We’ll start by adding a few common types to Spark Streaming. We’ll just add some data to a text file in our M4 log format, and we’ll use the valar keyword to declare the variable using the scala object’s class keyword (which brings us right into our first big discussion in this series – Scala programming).

I’ll be doing this in the StreamingContext Spark shell in Rodeo. I simply call the frame method and pass in the name of the data file, and Rodeo will create the log for me in my desired directory.

I’ve put this together in a collection of JAR files for easy distribution. Make sure the JAR files are in the same directory as the Spark home directory in your EMR AMI or Docker image (example would be s3://youramazon-node/).

Notice that the name of the config has changed from “custom” to “custom-name”. This is a feature of the config.YAML file that you will see after you define your config object. The format of your config file is as follows:

Next, we’ll define a config object with two properties and then call the setName method on our object. You can define as many properties as you need!

Once you have defined your config file, you’ll need to pass your config file as a parameter to the SparkContext method, like so:

We can access our config with the config() method, like this:

Finally, we can call the start method on our StreamingContext object. This is a special method that will make your Spark Streaming job run indefinitely, until you stop it.

When your StreamingContext has finished streaming data, then you’ll want to call close() on your SparkContext. By calling close(), your StreamingContext will be free of the SparkContext, and the StreamingContext’s data will be synchronized 0b46394aab
